H. RES. 597

Reaffirming the proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln on March 30, 1863, in which President Lincoln called for national humility, fasting, and prayer, and for other purposes.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

September 27, 2000

Mrs. CHENOWETH-HAGE submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Government Reform

RESOLUTION

Reaffirming the proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln on March 30, 1863, in which President Lincoln called for national humility, fasting, and prayer, and for other purposes.

Whereas in a proclamation dated March 30, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln stated as follows:

‘[W]hereas it is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to owe their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord:

‘And, insomuch as we know that, by His divine law, nations like individuals, are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world, may we justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war, which now desolates the land, may be but a punishment, inflicted upon us, for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole People?

We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity.

We have grown in numbers, wealth, and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!

‘It behooves us then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.’; and

Whereas although the United States is now at peace, civil unrest divides the Nation and its people:

Now, therefore, be it

  • Resolved, That–
    • (1) the House of Representatives reaffirms the proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln on March 30, 1863, in which President Lincoln called for national humility, fasting, and prayer;
      (2) it is the sense of the House of Representatives that all normal business of the Congress should be set aside on a Day of Repentance and Reconciliation for the United States, so that Members of the Congress may join with all Americans in a solemn assembly–
      • (A) to humble themselves with prayer and fasting;
        (B) to repent individual and corporate sins; and
        (C) to seek God’s healing, reconciliation, and favor for the Nation and its future; and
      • ( 3) the House of Representatives encourages people of faith throughout the Nation to join in solemn assembly for such a day.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

KINDNESS

“Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the KINDNESS of the Lord.”

1 Peter‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭NASB

‭‭“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly KINDNESS, and in your brotherly KINDNESS , love.”

2 Peter‬ ‭1‬:‭2‬-‭7‬ ‭NASB

‭‭“So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, KINDNESS, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.”

Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭NASB

Forgiveness

“Jesus *said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. But since he did not have the means to repay, his Lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made. So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’ And the Lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt.

But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you.’ But he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed. So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their Lord all that had happened. Then summoning him, his Lord *said to him, ‘You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?’ And his Lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him. My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart.”

Matthew‬ ‭18‬:‭22‬-‭35‬ ‭NASB

‭‭God is continually forgiving us of sin. As a believer in Jesus Christ, we must be ready to forgive others too. Jesus death on the cross and resurrection from the dead is a( heart )reminder of eternal life changing FORGIVENESS.

Pray for the salvation of others!

Do you know Jesus? Confess your sins and ask The Lord into you heart!

Discernment

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬-‭10‬ ‭NASB

‭‭“He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,”

Titus‬ ‭3‬:‭5‬ ‭NASB

‭‭“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Just as it is written, “For Your sake we are being put to death all day long; We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭28‬-‭39‬ ‭NASB

‭‭“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

‭‭John‬ ‭7‬:‭24‬ ‭NASB

Pray for discernment for our Nation. Ask for righteousness to increase. Pray that all believers will hear the voice of The One True God and not be deceived. Spend time in His Word!

REPENTANCE

“This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If we CONFESS our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.”

1 John‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬-‭10‬ ‭NASB

‭‭Confess while You pray!

 Churches

“I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false; and you have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake, and have not grown weary.

But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and REPENT and do the deeds you did at first;

or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place—unless you REPENT.”

Revelation‬ ‭2‬:‭2‬-‭5‬ ‭NASB

Victory In Spiritual Warfare

“The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity.”

Luke‬ ‭8‬:‭14‬ ‭NASB

‭‭Don’t let Satan carry you away to a place called Worries!

Don’t let the big fat deceiver take you down the unfruitful path to RICHES !

Don’t listen to lies that drop you off at the Me, Me, PLEASURES -Wasted-Life-Palace!

You must run in (Newness of Life)!

“Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.”

Romans‬ ‭6‬:‭4‬-‭7‬ ‭NASB

‭‭Free At Last when we walk in The Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18.)

Go ahead and reaffirm your commitment to God. Bring KINDNESSES to others and let others experience the FORGIVENESS that Jesus has given to you. Let The Holy Spirit DISCERN for you what is right and wrong. Confession of sin brings will bring REPENTANCE! Being with Jesus is a time for giving-fellowship-serving-word-worshiping.  As a CHURCH!

“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,”
