One way we serve our community is through the Reading Mentor program. This volunteer program helps the Corsicana Independent School District and Bowie Elementary. The goal of the program is to improve the reading levels of second grade students. When a child cannot read by the third grade the opportunity to read become more difficult. This program gives students some one on one attention every week. It’s easy to do and it takes little effort.
Volunteers visit the school once a week and read with an assigned 2nd Grade student. Volunteers can bring their own books or choose a book from a collection at the school. The Volunteer will read to the student for 15 minutes and then student will read to volunteer for 15 minutes.
To participate, volunteers will need to complete a background check (Page 1 & Page 2) and complete a short training session. For more information contact Jeff Fitzhugh.
