Learn MoreAnnie Armstrong FAQ
Who is Annie Armstrong?
Born July 11, 1850, in Baltimore, Maryland, Annie Armstrong developed a passion for missions early on. Despite her wealthy background, she dedicated her life to serving the poor, planting churches, and organizing mission efforts for African Americans and Native Americans.
In 1882, she founded the Woman’s Baptist Home Mission Society of Maryland. Six years later, she helped establish the Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) and became its first corresponding secretary, tirelessly promoting missions and raising funds. Her motto, “Go Forward,” inspired generations.
Annie’s leadership led to the first foreign missions offering in 1888, which helped send a missionary to China to support Lottie Moon. She served WMU until 1906, never accepting a salary.

Mary Hill Davis FAQ
Who was Mary Hill Davis?
Mary Hill Davis was born in Greenville, Georgia, and came to Texas as a small child in 1870 when her family moved from Tennessee to Dallas. At age 20, she married F.S. Davis, a physician. They had one son, Raymond, also a physician and surgeon. Mary’s heart for missions and people was evident in everything she did. She believed Texas was a vast mission field, and that immigrants needed to know Jesus just as much as citizens. Not only did she stir women to give and pray for missions, but she also encouraged leaders to take care of orphans, schools in Texas, as well as China, and retired pastors living in poverty.

What is the Mary Hill Davis Offering?

In 1935, the Executive Board of Woman’s Missionary Union of Texas recommended a resolution that the Week of Prayer for State Missions Offering be named the “Mary Hill Davis Offering”. The resolution was unanimously adopted, and the offering was thus named for the woman who had led Baptist women of Texas to pray for and give to missions efforts in Texas. Today, your gifts to the Mary Hill Davis Offering continue to empower state missions efforts for Texas Baptists. Today, Mary’s remarkable leadership continues to inspire Texas Baptists to give, pray, and serve.
What and when is the week of prayer?
On September 14-21, 2025, churches and individuals are encouraged to pray, promote and support Texas Baptists ministries and missionaries serving and sharing the Gospel around the state and world.

What is the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering?
Lottie Moon was sent as a Southern Baptist missionary to China from 1873 to 1912. She saw firsthand the world’s greatest problem — LOSTNESS. Meeting so many people who had never heard the gospel compelled her to write letters to American churches describing the need for a greater missionary presence.
In 1918, Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) named the annual Christmas offering for international missions after the woman who had urged them to start it.
